In the heart of the East Kimberley region, nestled among ancient rock formations and remote wilderness, the Argyle diamond mine gave birth to some of the world’s most extraordinary treasures. For over 37 years, this iconic site produced more than 90% of the planet’s pink diamonds gems so rare and radiant, they’ve become synonymous with elegance, exclusivity, and Australian pride.
A Geological Marvel
Argyle diamonds are forged deep within the Earth’s crust, through a unique volcanic pipe of olivine lamproite a geological anomaly that contributed to their distinctive hues. Unlike traditional diamonds formed in kimberlite, Argyle’s formation introduced trace elements and structural distortions that created a spectrum of colors: from champagne and cognac to the coveted pinks and reds.
The Pink Phenomenon
While the mine produced a variety of diamonds, it was the pinks that captured global attention. These gems range from soft blush to vivid bubblegum tones, graded by Argyle’s proprietary system: PP (Purplish Pink), P (Pink), PR (Pink Rosé), and PC (Pink Champagne), with intensity levels from 1 (most vivid) to 9 (lightest). Red diamonds rarer still are considered the pinnacle of Argyle’s offerings.
To put their rarity into perspective: only one pink diamond was found for every 2.5 million tons of ore processed.
A Collector’s Dream
Argyle pink diamonds aren’t just beautiful they’re investment-grade heirlooms. Since the mine’s closure in November 2020, demand has surged, and prices have soared. A 1-carat fancy pink diamond might fetch $140,000–$180,000, but an Argyle-certified equivalent can exceed $200,000. Each stone carries a chain of custody and authentication, making it a prized possession for collectors and connoisseurs alike.
